riding after foal is born? Can't Post

How long should a person wait to ride a mare after she has her foal? We got a good looking white gaited mare off a neighbor that couldn't afford to feed her. I have no idea what breed she is and neither did the neighbor. She came from the auction a couple months ago. She has a 6 week old foal beside her too. She's a nice tempered horse but I do need to get her in better shape I know before any serious riding. Anyway, I tried to ride last night and all went well for the first 10 minutes. I just took the little colt out to the pasture with us and let him follow on his own. The mare seemed like she was decently trained but she wouldn't take her eyes off the colt. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she has a gait very similar to a foxtrotter. Not quite the same but close. My tail doesn't move when she trots. I sure wish I knew what breed she was.
Anyway, I took off at a slow trot down the pasture and got some distance between us and the colt and when she noticed how far we were the mare tried to turn left and I told her right so she went off bucking. I almost hung on but ended up getting tossed. She came back to me and let me on so I just rode her back to the colt and got off to let my son on. He only lasted about 2 seconds before being bucked off. We gave up after that figuring she just wasn't in the mood with the colt there.

Do any of you ride with young ones trailing along or should I wait to ride her again till the colt is weaned? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.
