parking out a gaited horse Can't Post

i 'inherited' 2 spotted saddle horses when my husband and i purchased our farm (long story- gist is the family we purchased it from had to move quickly and didnt have time to sell them)

i ride dressage and eventing- so i have had very little experience with gaited horses.. and since i already have more than i can ride i am selling these two- one of the questions a potential buyer had was if the horses knew how to park out. while i know what it is, i have no idea how to ask a horse to do it.... or train one to if they dont know how...

can anyone give me the basics??

much appreciated!

Hey Kelly....
I am with you..no experience with gaited horses. Although, I am thinking that a good test would be to stand them up, just like you would in an in hand hunter/sporthorse class and use the dressage whip to ask them to stand up like you would normally. If they know how to park out, they should automatically do it. Otherwise, I would just assume that they don't know how. Did the previous owners ever show or were they trail horses? If they didn't show, they probably wouldn't know how to park out. As I am certain you know, it takes alot of work to get them to set up the proper way...so if they don't know how, then you'll have your work cut out for you! Keep me posted!Smile Christina

Re: [lkvaughan] parking out a gaited horse [In reply to] Can't Post

We just got a horse into the rescue this week-end.....A little Quarab. He knows how to park out. I have never dealt with gaited horses either, so I just know what makes him park out. If I get him set up and tap his shoulder with a whip he parks out. Not sure if the is the normal training or not.
Maybe someone with actual knowledge and experience will reply.
