Hackamore Can't Post

It looks like we are close to getting baby (coming two) and are looking at having her in a hackamore as she gets a bit older. We have always used hair ropes for our rigs but have seen more and more folks using Mohair and braided nylon ropes as mecates. Does anyone have any experience with the softer options? I don’t see so many folks using them at the shows but I suspect that is because they already own the equipment.

Anyone have experience in training with Mohair or Nylon?

Thanks,
Mark

Personally I hate nylon. It doesn't have near the feel that mohair does. As I'm sure you know Mark the whole purpose of a hackmore is feel. Give and release with no trauma to the horse. Keep the mouth soft for a bit later on. You also have the added benefit of the mohair as an irritant when you pull on it. The mohair won't burn like the nylon will. That irritation is part of the training process too.

Re: [Cowboydoc] Hackamore [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks Richard.
We decided to go with a regular horse hair rope. I got my wife a new bosal that is pretty nice and we are going to have Doug Krouse make us up a new mecate. We are going to go in sometime next week and see what he might make us that’s different from what you normally see.

I like the Mohair feel but all we have are horse hair so I think we will stick with that for now. Sometimes the old ways are the best…..

Regards,
Mark
