Horse Stall Charges Other Horses Can't Post

Can anyone help with this problem? I have a horse ( Mare ) when it is in the stall will charge the stall gate when other horses are lead by. This is very upsetting to the person that is leading the other horse.

This horse is no problem when it is in the field with other horses. Could the charging horse be protecting its
food or maybe it could be just protecting its space?

This charging horse has a goat as a stall mate. Could this mare be protecting the goat or stall mate like a mare
with foal would?

I would thank any help or leads that would come my way

Thanks

Hell Chowl, This could turn out to be a little long winded so I'll try to keep it short! This is just a guess but theres a whole lot to look at!
*..I bet U'r horse is kinda low on the peckin order @ the stable...
If so this is just her way of trying to get/keep her dominance over another weak or low horse in the peckin order! Feed probable has something to do with it too! Really not much YOU can do about U'r horse doing that but change the envirorment but it the other owner that you have the problem with, so U need to work the problem! I'd get permision from the BO to put a door & screen in the opening so my horse couldn't get to the other horse! maybe a sliding door with a screen(plastic coated screen with 2"x2" opening) where the horse eats!
*..Move the feed bucket to back corner of stall, to keep peace at barn!
*..Move horse to different stall, where she's last & other horses don't have to walk past her.
*..I don't think the goat is the problem, but move goat out for a while!
BTW, how much time does mare have turnout(TO) time! Well that's a lot to absorb and try, so maybe this will help sow down people to people problem at barn but I really don't think U'r gonna change the charater of a/the horse BUT!

Re: [roho] Horse Stall Charges Other Horses [In reply to] Can't Post

I would agree with Roho on many of the points.

It sort of depends on what the behaviour looks like at that moment but based on your description I would guess its a dominance thing. Horses always set a pecking order and young horses tend to test it frequently.

Once a horse is stalled and gets away with rather agressive behaviour that goes unchecked by the herd they tend to continue it.

I like the fact that you have a goat for company.

There is a gal that has a horse in a small pasture outside her house and every day I drive by and see that poor mare sitting there watching the cars go by. When we drive by with a trailer full of horses she gets to pacing that fance line and calling out to them as we go by. That lady just does not get that horses alone have a lot more stress on them.

Regards,
Mark
