Help in diet for quarter-crack Can't Post

I have a new horse that was my in-laws. They were not able to take care of her very well. So we took her. She is not shoes and has not been for years. But has not seen a ferrier. I am feeding her grass and alfalfa, vitamins, mineral salt block, corn oil for fat. She is also out in blow sand that distributes her weight. I am going to have my ferreir clean up her hoofs. She has a quarter-crack.

I feel that she has a hole in diet. I need to include: fatty acids, biotin, methionine, lysine, zinc, and copper to improve her hoofs. From what I have above what might not be included and what works to fill it?

Thank you,

Sounds like what you're giving her is a pretty good diet. You might ask your farrier if he has any suggestions for supplements that might be good for the hooves. You might ask your Vet, also. I'm all for getting professional advice for feeding. The labels on the vitamins and the supplements all promise you the moon and the stars. A lot of them are unneccesary, sometimes too much can actually be harmful.
By the way, what is "blow sand"?

mffarmall,
I would think that a good farrier could assist with the quarter cracks. Maybe a little more attention would do the trick. My experience has not been very positive so I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Jim,
thats a nice picture of your horse.

My ferrier stopped by and cleaned up her hoofs. Said that they looked good to him, just needed to be cleaned up. TBs can get a hoof problem as they age. So there is not much to have done. Only clean them up. She goes shoeless. Blow sand is just sand that the wind has moved into a place in a much higher volume then clay.

Flies bothering a horse's fetlocks can cause them to stomp their feet incessantly, leading to quarter crack. Also, a good hoof lotion applied often during dry weather can help alot.
