West Nyle Can't Post

Has anyone given a West Nyle shot by self? Can you get it without a Vet?

I am sure we would never do that sort of thing because, according to Ft Dodge, you can only get the West Nile shots through a vet who will administer them.Laugh

But lets say you knew a vet who trusted you, they knew your horses health, they knew you could give the shot, knew that this was a booster and was willing to sell you some then its really easy. Heck, you might even find a trusted feed store that will sell it to you. But like I said.....we would never do such a thing.....'cause its against the law. Wink

If I had a bunch of horses I might buy a whole bottle but mostly I would just get the dosage already in a syringe from the vet. I would be really sure to keep it cold while transporting it and administer it as soon as you could. Dont let it hang out in the meat tray of the fridge for a week and you should be fine.

So if I were to give such a shot I might start by cleaning a spot on the neck. About half way from the bottom to the top and half way between the ears and the withers. I would grab myself a handful of skin like I was neck twitching a horse and then give 'em the shot. IM is fine....no IV. And, I am sure you already know but you dont have to bury the needle.....just get past the skin.

Then watch them for a day or two and you should be fine.

Regards,
Mark

Around here it depends on the vet. You do not get a discount when you purchase it and choose to administer it yourself. I prefer to let the vet do it, but one vet up by Lake of the Ozarks stated he sold West Nile to owners who did not want to bring their horses to him. Since the horse was there, I waited a bit longer and let his personnel do the shot. This was not my regular vet (we had purchased a horse up his way and needed a new Coggins test, so I had that vet do a vaccination update at the same time).
