Holistic Horse Health Can't Post

My husband and I have healthier by becoming vegetarian and eating and using only organic products and now we want to do the same health wise for all our animals. I was able to find dog and cat organic feed. I am wondering if anyone here uses only organic/holistic ways of caring for their Horses such as feeding and also, vitamins and immune builders. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Re: [Jenifae] Holistic Horse Health [In reply to] Can't Post

After 47 years of unhealthy eating habits and being overweight my doctor tried to put me on blood pressure meds last May. I respectfully declined and promptly launched a personal nutrition crusade. Without even planning to become one I realized within 6 weeks of eating as healthy as possible that I had become vegetarian and couldn't fathom putting a piece of meat in mouth. I lost 80 lbs in 7 months and my blood pressure and cholesterol fell well below concern by eating fruits, vegetables, whole-grains, and being particularly careful that I kept up my protein with homegrown eggs, fish, beans, nuts, and skim milk. Substituting the coffee pot with a juice machine I have become nicknamed "Juice" at work. Never felt better in my life and nobody appreciates the weight loss more than my ponies when I hop on!

I have slipped over the holidays with my kids being home from school and by eating turkey and some lean pork, not enough to cause any weight gain thankfully but I have noticed my well-being has declined a little. So now that everbody is back in college I'm dropping the pork and fowl and phasing in organic as much as I can and kicking the aerobic excercise up several notches. I'm anxious to self-evaluate the results.

As far as holistic health plans for horses, I have an 30yo horse, a 15yo dog, and of course my 47yo aches and pains and we have all taken a big dose of glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM (I buy the cheaper "horse" version and we all use it) every morning for several years and I can speak for all of us.. that stuff works miracles. Having played tennis all my life, my joints were wearing out and I finally blew a knee and was facing having to go under the knife. Not being keen on that prospect I started this supplement and along with physical therapy I was back on the court in weeks and now with the weight loss I'll challenge any teenager to a foot race. MSM is fun to research, I could write a book about what I feel it has done for me in many respects. I crashed a horse into a tree on Thanksgiving and my doctor was astounded at how quickly my collarbone healed. A skin cancer was removed on the side of my nose requiring a cheek flap and 24 stitches, very little visible scar. If I sprain an ankle, it heals in days instead of weeks. Lactic acids used to make me lame after strenuous activity. Enough said?

Also, you hear people tell you to lime your pastures for the health of the grass. It's even more important for the health of your horses. Bones are made of calcium. One of the reasons race horses are raised in Kentucky is because of the high calcium in their soil. Hard to quantify, but I believe it.

Sun's up and I hear whinnies, hollering for their haydaddy..

Good for you that is fantastic. I have been interested and involved in Health and Fitness my entire life. I was a Gymnast and a Dancer. Then I became a counselor and now utilize that with my Hypnotherapy. I work alot with the weight loss.
As a child I was basically a vegetarian. I hated meat. My Depression raised Mom would have nothing to do with it and by God you clean your plate or sit there all night. I remember many a night at the table alone. LOL! Not so funny then.
Then after awhile in my late twenties and early thirties I thought the only way to get your protien was through meat. What a lie. There is protein in most all dark green leafy veges and all veges have all the vitamins and minerals we need. So, about 2 years ago my Husband was having alot of headaches and we were concerned about his cholesteral and heart. I didn't really eat much meat but, that's when we stopped and I felt like I came back to who I truely am. How I got involved in Organics is again my husband saw an informercial of Kevin Trudeau on Natural Cures they dont' want you to know about and he got the book and I'm the one who started reading it. I didn't realize how bonbarded we are with chemicals and toxins in our food, water, cleaning products, make-up, everything. Companies use additives and chemicals to make the shelf life longer but, the food industry even puts chemicals in our food to cause more hunger so, we'll buy more food. Then I thought it was interesting that the food administration is connected to the drug administration via; Food and Drug administration. How weird - why would food be connected to drugs. Well, the more poisens we eat the more diseases we get the more drugs we need. This country is fianced and controlled by the pharmacuetical companies. Which, I always believed. So, it just made sense to be to get back to nature and eat foods that are free from being grown with pesticides and treated with additives and colorings. I intially lost some weight also, by doing this and feel like I did when I was a teenager. What a trip. I use vitamins and herbs also, and think MSM, chondritin, glucosomine are terrific and get most my supplements in organic form. So, I want to give my horses the same toxic-chemical free food and supplements also.
Sorry, so long. hehehe
So, I was wondering if anyone knew of a site where I can get those supplements and how you can find feed that is grown pesticide free.
Thanks
Jennifer

Jennifer, I have to admit I don’t pay much attention to the details of our horse feed other than making sure that they are clean of debris and bad weeds. We do however try to get out guys out in the pastures as much as possible and we are very fussy about when grows there. Its actually easier to maintain and start a well balanced pasture for grazing and the mixture of feeds, I think, is good for them.

I don’t think I have invested nearly the time into pasture management as someone like Cowboydoc as we only have relatively small pastures at our place. Perhaps he can reply. Beyond that you might try your local ag extension for inputs.

Regards,
Mark
