Equine Herpesvirus type -1 Can't Post

F.Y.I

Equine Herpesvirus type -1 (EHV-1) is spreading in the northeast / racetracks, It has been detected at Turfway Park in KY, Pimlico and Laurel Park in Maryland and now at Penn National racecourse in PA.
Two Horses have been put down at Pimlico and the track is in full Quarantine.

Three questions?
1) Do you vaccinate your horses at all

2) What do you vacicnate against

3) Do you call the Vet or do it yourself

Hi Buck!
I found some interesting info about Equine Herpesvirus Type 1. Here is the link: http://www.uky.edu/...ges/biblios/EHV1.htm
To answer your questions, YES I do vaccinate my horses and my Vet does all of my vaccinations. Some people do administer certain vaccines themselves, but I prefer that my vet do it. This way, I know it is done right.
In PA, for example there are certain vaccines (Rabies, in particular) that a vet has to do. For some horseshows, you need a CVI(certificate of Vet inspection) in addition to a coggins, and a vet won't sign it unless they have administered the shots and they are certifying that it has been done.) This may be an attempt to help curtail outbreaks such as the one you informed us about.
As for what vaccines, your vet is the best person to ask. I pretty much do EW,Rabies,West Nile,Bot,RhinoFlu,Potomac,Tetnus, and anything else that my vet feels is necessary. Based on what you do with your horses, you can decide if you need certain vaccines. I keep my girls at home and do not have alot of horses coming and going. I do go to shows/hunter paces, so I like them to have the rhino flu 2x a year. I like giving the botulism as we have all probably found a dead bird etc. occasionally in our hay or something floating in the water tank...so I think this is a worth while investment. Bot is usually fatal in horses.
I hope others have info to share about what vaccines they use.Laugh

This has recently been discovered in some race horses at the Charles Town Race Track in Charles Town, Virginia, about 11 miles from where I live. I believe five horses have been put down as a result of it.

I guess one of my main points for starting this thread is most people vaccinate their horses, especially if you are traveling with them to events & shows, with these Race horses they are big investments for their owners, and in all probability they have been Vaccinated to protect their investment, so the BIG question is: "DO VACCINATIONS WORK !!!! ?????" the EHV-1 vaccine I have used in the past is apparently not too effective against the EHV-1 virus that is killing so many horses, makes you wonder.
Cowboydoc what do you say

Buck et al.....
I spoke to my vet today and she is still gathering info about this situation at the tracks, but says this could be a new strain. Yes, vaccines do work. It's just like when humans get the flu shot, you can still get the flu if it is a different strain than the one the vaccine was made to protect you against. You have a higher chance of getting ill without any vaccines at all, I am sure you know that. It's the best chance your horses have to keep heatlthy, especially if you travel with them.
Hopefully Cowboydoc will comment.
