Hoof Care Can't Post

HellO, Roho here, does anyone have a special treatment for winter hoof care or any special treatment for horse hoofs all year. This year has been wild in SET(South East Texas) REAL wet in spring/summer & now No Rain...I've heard lots of horse hoof problems this year. One more question...How come horses that live on pasture & lack of human contact seem to look as good or better than horses that are fed & hayed everyday? There are horses close to me that look fatter than ours & their feet look better to & are never fed or even toughed..

Re: [roho] Hoof Care [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't do anything special up here in the winter. Just put shoes on my warmblood is all. This year I started doing it on my quarter horse too. I just got done welding up some stellite studs on a new set of shoes for both of them and hope to have the farrier out tomorrow to put them on. The studs really help a lot on ice and rocks with traction. All it is is a hardfacing welding rod that I put little built up spots on the bottom of the shoes with. It's easier and a lot cheaper than those brazed on boron studs farriers do.

These two horses are real powerhouses though and when we go climbing up a rock faced cliff I don't want them slipping.

I never have figured out why pastured horses look so much better than barn kept horses though. They really do. We almost always keep ours on pasture but the weather has been whacky on us this year too. We're not that far from you really. It was all I could do to get my bermuda producing hay. We were running round the clock irrigation all season long this year and I wasn't able to graze it very much. My wheat isn't growing near as fast as it usually does either this year. Usually I'm grazing it already and its over a foot tall. It's barely a couple inches now and doing all it can to stay green.

I usually prefer no shoes on highway for my horses. Or some Amish rubber shoes. The studded shoes would probably work ok I guess but I don't think I ever tried it on pavement. They are easy though. Some farriers do it. Just put about 3 small weld spots on each side and one or two in the front with a steallite welding rod. If you go to the welding supply and ask for a hardfacing rod they will know what you mean. Just keep the spots small. It doesn't need much. I learned this trick from an Amish farrier that did my dads driving horses. He always did this in the winter. It get's nasty in Maryland.

Where is the salt grass trail ride? I never heard of that? Is it a big organized ride?

Peanut Oil brushed onto hooves works great. There is also Hoof Marvel sprayed onto hooves. We had a drought this summer/fall and now we are in very wet conditions, and Peanut Oil has worked great for a friend of mine and Hoof Marvel has worked great for me. Both are all natural and organic.
