black walnut Can't Post

Hi, I am getting ready to make several new pastures for 2 new horses, but one of them will have several black walnut trees in it. Is this a problem, can it be harmful? Any input would be great. Thanks!

Re: [kmw9602ber] black walnut [In reply to] Can't Post

I have read somewhere that black walnut is hazardous to horses in bedding, so I would assume that it is hazardous to them as a tree. I would personally take the black walnut trees out (stumps and all).
Hope this helps,
Dani

From what I understand of toxic trees, the wilted leaves are the most dangerous and in the case of black walnut the shavings are dangerous also. I don't know why or how though.

I'm not sure where you are at but in this area almost noone has any true black walnut. They are too disease prone here so what is commonly done is they take the rootstock of a black walnut and splice on an English walnut. It gives it the hardiness of the black with the disease resistance of an English. We have several of these in my pasture and they don't bother the horses at all. I even asked the vet about it once and he said they are fine. Just make sure of the variety you have before you cut them down.

If you do have to remove them I'd recommend putting an ad in the paper and selling them. Walnut of any kind is worth a pretty penny these days. I work on guns for a living and make my own stocks for rifles so when I get a chance to get a walnut tree I take it. It's a lot cheaper than buying the lumber already milled. I do it all myself here and save money.

Thanks for the great information. I know the goat loves the wilted leaves of these trees, so I will have to check on the exact type. Thanks again.
