Alfalfa Cubes Can't Post

I have an Arab stallion (spoiled dirty rotten ol' man) that really likes alfalfa hay over the bermuda I feed the rest of my ponies. Problem is I can't find any of good quality this year. I am experimenting with alfalfa cubes which he seems to love but I'm leery of leaving him alone with them for fear he'll choke on them. Not that he bolts his food, quite the opposite. Am I being paranoid by breaking the cubes into smaller bites and and soaking them in water to soften them up? I'm new to this cube thing but the price is good, no waste, and the stuff sure smells good. Any good/bad experiences to ponder?

Good for you for spoiling a horse. I wish more were spoiled…

We feed cubes as part of our feed program and have for years. We started for the same reason you are….getting good weed free bale feed is a challenge. When we first moved from bale feed to cubes, not to be confused with pellets, we were worried about choking and them wolfing through it too quickly. We had a reiner at that time that barely drank water but loved to dunk his feed. It’s been at least 7 years now that we feed the cubes and have never had a problem.

Having said that, not all cubes are the same. When we made the jump we were worried that the cubes would just be a way to hide bad feed and for many manufacturers I think that’s true. Once the feed is shoved into a cube it’s really hard to tell what is in there. We did find a manufacturer that had superior cubes and, not surprisingly, it’s because he started out with great feed out of his fields. Compared to the bale feed you find from a normal broker this stuff was fantastic regardless of whether it was alfalfa, oat, orchard, etc. His facility is spottles. It was cleaned every day. No dust, no bugs, no rodents……nothing.

So look for a place that uses only the best product from the field. Then see if they put any coloring agent, flavoring agent, any binders or if they steam it. Too many places use a green dye because it does hide bad feed. Many places use a binder or steam to keep it together and both of those take away from the taste.

We still use bale feed for their 3rd feeding at night. Mostly we use it in the winter so they stay warmer and don’t pester each other too much.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the confidence builder Mark. These cubes come from Montana, company by the name of Manzanana (sp).

I hear what you say about, "just feeding 'em so they'll shuddup"

I made sort of a mistake building my stallion barn basically right in my front yard by the garage door, he's always there putting on his "starvin marvin" face when we walk out.

Sounds a lot like us Sly…..most of the time our horses are getting’ us broke to do what they want faster than we seem to get them broke for us.

But maybe that’s not all bad…..we sort of get to know and like the horses that come through our place as individuals with their own personalities. I know its different for some folks be we like it this way.

Mark

Another great thing about Alfalfa cubes(aside from your horse LOVING them) is soaking them in water to soften them, and using the cubes as a means to get extra water in to your horse. This coming from a colic paranoid person! Vet recommended here in the Northeast!Smile

Well……that’s a great idea! I am going to try that tonight. All the horses we have now are good drinkers but it sure can’t help to see if that works for them. I guess it would also help make sure that they get all their supplements since the supplements we use are powder and should stick to the wet cubes.

Great idea! Thanks!

Me and ol' T are hooked on the cubes now. He's got me "trained" into soaking them for 5 mins in warm water and giving him all the "soup". Done this way I don't have to worry with breaking up the cubes.

Glad to see that you guys are wetting the cubes with warm water, the horses seem to love it that way in my barn!Tongue
Also, if the cubes are wet and mostly dissolved, there is no chance of them choking on one.(Had this happen to a friends horse and the vet had to come dislodge the cube).
Here in PA, we also wet down the pellets we feed in the winter. You can never get too much water in to them. I have a friend who rides endurance and she does the same before a ride to keep them hydrated anytime of the year!
Christina...(not smashing ice today from buckets as it is an unusual 50 degrees!)
