Why is Fescue hard on Apps. Can't Post

I have a friend who tell me that her Apps do not thrive at all on fescue hay while mine do quite well on it as the basic pasture and hay. I do take mares off the fuscue who have been sucessfully bred.
Anyone else have the same trouble as my friend whose horses lose weight and cannot get by on fuscue.

Probably has more to do with her horses than fescue. In general, fescue can cause serious problems in late-stage pregnant broodmares, and can increase sensitivity to sun in white-skinned areas on horses. Several articles I have read say that it can affect weight gain in cattle, but horses and cattle are pretty different. Most horses around here (central New Mexico) live on fescue pastures.

Martha
Thanks for the reply. My thoughts on the fescue also, she probably does have horses which have lived most of their lives on some other hay.
Do you have Morgans?

I never heard of fescue until I came here. I only heard of Alfalfa, Timothy, Orchard, Bermuda. I know it's a grass but, what the heck is it? Smile

With Love and Patience you get alot more done.
