Morgans $$ How much?? Can't Post

How much would a good Morgan for riding pleasure Western cost on average? Cross bred is okay, no reg is okay with me also.

You shouldn't have to pay all outdoors for a pleasure riding horse, and unless you've got a thing for Morgans I wouldn't narrow the choices down to just one breed. Nothing against Morgans, but I don't think they have a corner on the market for pleasure/trail riding. We've found prices to be all over the map, from free to a good home, to the stratosphere, depending on how bad someone wants to get rid of the horse, or how much training the horse has had and how long his pedigree is. (Or how high an opinion the seller has of himself or the horse.) Here in New England we're always hearing about how cheap horses are "out west". I'll go out on a limb here and guesstimate $2,000 as average, 'cause you'll find 'em for more and you'll find 'em for less. Clear as mud...

Well, that's a pretty broad range of horses you are talking there. I know of two purebred Morgans but unregistered, one a 2003 model and the other a 2004, but both unbroke, who are for sale as a package in Arkansas for $1000. But that is because the guy is finally getting out of horses and because they are not started under saddle, and I guess it's cheap to raise horses in Arkansas.

Figure this - a good Morgan horse will cost anywhere from $1500 on up, if you buy that horse as a weanling. I know of a few that are more cheaply priced, but most are in that range. Once you get it started by a professional, you've probably spent another $700-$2000 depending on how long you left that horse with the trainer, how good the trainer was, etc. Most trainers are at least $500/month now, and that would be rock bottom prices in my part of the world.

However, in the funny world of horses, an older started horse that either hasn't been used much or is now considered excess and not useful to the current owner is often worth much less on the market than what it cost to raise, train, and feed that horse. So - you see many decent Morgan horses for sale at prices between $1500 and $3000. I would expect to pay a bit more for a registered Morgan than a QH with similar training, but it depends on the part of the country you are in. Morgans are much rarer than QHs where I live. Now I have one broke-to-ride Morgan gelding for sale right now, but he isn't cheap because he's my only well-started gelding, so I am not in a hurry to sell him!
