Scratching Posts? Can't Post

I'm looking to put a scratching post in my pasture/paddock area. I've seen several situations where people have put "brushes" on posts - brushes that look like those you would find at a car wash or from a street sweeper.

Unfortunately, I can't find a source for these as car washes don't use brushes anymore and street sweepers use the steel brushes so they don't wear out that fast.

Are there places that sell brushes like this or does anyone else have ideas about what I could use?

Thanks for your help!

Not sure what size you're looking for in brushes, but I think that using outdoor carpeting would be a better/easier solution. You could wrap the post with it. You can get some pretty "scratchy" stuff like they use at golf driving ranges for the mats. I would make sure that the method of securing it to the post doesn't leave any exposed screws or nails. Maybe make a "keyway" in the post that you could push each end of the carpet into then use a piece of wood (oak) as the "key" and counterbore holes for attachment lag screws. Another concern I would have is the post being pushed over from repeated pushing on it. Our horse loves to use our backs as a scratching post after we take his bridle off. As you probably know, one flick of a head exerts a lot of force.

The barn where we board our horse has 40-50 horses and no scratching posts. The grass paddocks DO have a sand area that most horses roll in as soon as they can. Seems to serve the purpose and after a roll they seem pretty content.

I was at the Horse Expo in Minnesota last weekend and there is a company selling "itching post" products... they are essentially sheets of rubber with knobs all over one side that you wrap around a post, fence, side of building, or other item so that your horses can rub against it. I bought 3 and am pouring a concrete post to screw them to. That should give them plenty to rub against while also insuring that it's safe and lasts a long time.

Here is their website: http://www.itchin-post.com/

I hope it works out for you!
