Harrows? Can't Post

I was just contemplating purchasing a harrow for the sand & gravel pile I call an arena. County Manufacturing has two I have been eyeing for a long time, a rotary model and a flexible tine model. Any comments about which would be better for my application? Arena is small - ~100 X 80? Mixed sand and gravel/small rocks (I live in the desert and just cleared land). Every couple of years I have a friend with a tractor who will come and do a deep harrowing, so mostly I am looking to smooth and fluff the surface.

Hi Martha,
If you are not doing any pattern work (riding in the same part of the arena all the time such as reining, trail, etc) then most things would work.

I would recommend something that not only loosens the footing but also levels it. The best out there are Kiser but they are a ton of money. I also like the rotary harrows as they do a good job of putting air back in the footing and the also tend to fill in the low spots. They also have the added benefit of bouncing off of arena posts rather than hooking onto one and tearing it out.

If your tractor has Top n Tilt on the 3pt hitch so much the better.

I used one for a while at one barn and it worked well.

Mark

Martha,
I think that most of the circular harrows work about the same. I used this one http://www.rotoharrow.com/home.htm at a previous barn and it held up very well. Some of the are not very stiff so the whole thing sort of wobbles side to side which defeats the purpose. This one did not do that and the teeth held up very well.

The other thing is to get one that is just wider that the tractors wheels. If you are going to use a lawn tractor or ATV you might get the one that is triangular. While I have never used one of these I know a guy that has one for his round pen and it works well for him.

Regards,
Mark
