Horse fencing Can't Post

We are in the process in putting up a fence for our pony. We are using 4x4 posts and are considering 1x6 pressure treated for the rail. We would like to know if there are any vinyl rails that can be attached to the 4x4 posts. There is no changing the posts. Any ideas?

Re: [CarMar] Horse fencing [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello CarMar,
Somewhere here on HBN or TBN I wrote up an answer to general fencing questions based on my experiences. I never thought about attaching vinyl rails to a wood post but if it could be done securely it might work out ok. Generally I am not a fan of vinyl because I have seen too many horse run through it and, despite what people say, rustling is still a pretty common occurance.

On the other hand anything is better that barb wire.

You might try large washers and a large wood screw through the pre drilled vinyl and into the wood. I would run the rails on the inside of the post and but them flush. I guess if I were going to try it I would also run a hot wire top and bottom.

If you give it a shot let us know what you think.

Regards,
Mark

Re: [CarMar] Horse fencing [In reply to] Can't Post

I probably read the post on TBN. My husband and I both enjoy TBN and that is how I discovered HBN. I have also been to CBN. I wasn't sure if I would find a different crowd with a different set of information. I think we are going to with the pt and make a cross pattern mboulais has post on horse fence going up on TBN and is posting pictures. We are at a stand still with that project while we decide what we are going to do but hope to get back to it next week or so. This isn't our first fence and wanted something on the low maintence side. Several neighbors have fences and I didn't want to copy so that is why we decided to go with the x pattern with a top and bottom rail. I will be running electric across the top the keep the pony away from the buildings. Thanks for the input.
