Fencing Questions Can't Post

Congratulations on this new forum! I will monitor this discussion area and be available to answer any questions that may come up concerning fencing. My name is Chuck. I am a 5th generation cattle producer that has also worked extensively with horses. I am an Animal Science graduate of Purdue University, have taught Vocational Agriculture at the high school level and am the president of FFC Fencing Co., a full service fence contracting business that I started in 1974 and has grown to include two locations and to one of the largest volume installers of Polyvinyl Fence Systems products in the U.S. I will be happy to provide an unbiased, Fact based opinion on fencing and facility questions that come up.

Re: [FFC_Fencing] Fencing Questions [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Chuck,
Thanks for the intro. We had white vinyl fence installed on our horse pastures couple of years ago. Now there are some green growth on all the fencing and I was told that I should wash them every couple of years. What do you think is the best agent to use to get rid of all that stuff on the fence? A friend says that he uses dilute bleach and just spray on the fence. Do you have any suggestion as to what to use? How? and How often?
If any other poster have question/answer and/or opinion please respond.
Thanks in advance.

Cottonhawk,
Your friend was correct, a 10% bleach soln. will do the trick, add a little dish soap for better results. Inexpensive and effective! Just be sure to rinse the ground well afterwards or you may unintentionally take care of the hard to trim grass beneath the fencing also! Wink

PS. 12oz of bleach in 1 gallon container, fill with water, add some dish soap and spray on liberally! Use as needed. You can also use this soln to clean your deck!

Christina,
Thanks for the info.
After I spray on the solution, do I need to brush or hose it off? If not, how long does it take for the green spots to disappear? Fence line is no problem as I spray the fence line with Roundup and keep it clear anyway.

Re: [Cottonhawk] Fencing Questions [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting question on the "mildew" or Mold found on your PVC fence. The fact is that most good PVC fence extrusions are manufactured with a mildew inhibitor in the vinyl "recipe". Because of that we have found that mildew will not generally grow on the PVC itself. It is most often growing on the "dirt" that is on the vinyl. Many time that "dirt" can be nothing more than a thick coating of dust. That is why we have found most incidents of mildew occur after long period of dry weather followed by some moisture. The dirt has not had a change to be washed away by rain. Once the dust becomes wet the longer it can stay damp the more chance there is for mildew growth. That is why many time one will see significantly more mildew in shady areas.

The previous response of correct in that a weak solution of bleach will kill the growing organisms in the mold or mildew. In most cases a rub with a damp cloth will also remove the dirt/mildew as well.

Cotton,
Let the solution "sit" for a few hours...a nice sunny afternoon would be best. Then, if you can rinse it off that's possible.Tongue

Chuck....Thanks for the explanation and now I understand why the mildew appear more on some area than others.
Christina....Thanks again. The maples has just started to turn Fall color on the ranch and we've got some needed rain lately. Typically our rainy season starts around this time of the year. Next stretch of sunny days I will spray my vinyl fence.
