What do you use to maintain your tack? Can't Post

What products do you use to maintain your tack? I just started using leather therapy...

On another note, one set of reins we have dry rotted and broke. On an older set of reins, my wife submersed them in needsfoot(sp?) oil. The reins are still in great condition, but it makes a mess of the hands since it seems the oil is till coming out of them. So, what do you use to prevent this and not make a mess of your hands? The other tack seems to be in great condition(My wife takes good care of it), maybe we had cheap quality reins?

Joe, for older equipment we tend to clean our tack with a good cleaner. I think most of them are pretty good so just avoid the ones with alcohol in them.

Once it is cleaned and dry we put a couple of light coats of olive oil on it. We do the same for new tack. Get a piece of sheepskin, maybe a 4”x4” and trim the wool down to about a ¼”. Then lightly rub a number of coats into the leather. This will keep the leather soft and supple, even at cold weather, and not break down the leather fibers. We use our tack almost daily so we do this twice a year or more often if the leather feels dry.

Regards,
Mark

We keep our tacks clean and lightly oiled. We keep all our tacks in our tack room which is dry and maintain heated.

i grew up in pony club so am a stickler for clean tack Wink

i REALY like the leather therapy products

for REALY grimy tack the soap Kirk's Castile (you can get it at some grocery stores and some tack stores) is good- just make sure you oil it thoroughly afterwards

avoid using Neatsfoot oil compound (pure neatsfoot oil is good)- it contains petrolim distallates that arent good for the leather or stiching
we like using olive oil too- just make sure its the "cold pressed" or naturaly extracted variety- the chemicals used to extract it otherwise are again harmfull to the leather

i have heard that dunking/ saturating the leather in oil actually weakens it- i prefer to put several light coats and let it absorb- then you dont have to wory about it oozing oil Smile

Joe, we use neatsfoot oil for our leather tack, too, but I use nylon reins. They are wide and flat and very comfortable. In the catalog they are called parachute cord. They are strong, and I use them to tie my horse on the trail. Also use a nylon halter bridle. I know this is heresy to the purists, but I like the easy care. Some riders are going to a new product called biothane, and I think they've been improving it, but what we tried seemed too hard and plastic-ey.
