I think people's opinions will vary on this, but we tend to have what we consider to be average size horses, around 15 hands more or less, and to us a comfortable stall size is 10'X10' or 12'X12'. We have our barns set up so that the horses can come in and out at will, which we consider ideal, but that might not work for everyone. The more time the horse is going to spend in it, the bigger it ought to be.

I would sure agree with Jim that you see a lot of 10x10’s and 12x12’s out there.

Based on my experience 12x12’s are more common. In new barns I would almost bet that 12x16’s are becoming more popular than 10x10’s these days.

12 x 12 is the smallest size for a quarter horse you should consider. Bigger is better as that helps the horse from developing stall boredom which can lead to destructive behavior like wood chewing and cribbing.
